Formers.-In a machine for shaping or bending car bumpers &c. a work-piece is clamped to a curved former by hydraulic means 62 and is urged against the former by a shoe pressed by a fluid &c. operated ram. The ram is mounted on a frame swung about a post 25 by a fluid-operated cylinder 39. At the commencement of the forming operation pressure is applied to a cylinder 61 to clamp the work-piece to the former and pressure applied to cylinder 44 through a cross-head 46 and roller 47 presses the shoe against the workpiece. The table 31 with cylinder 44, cross-head 46 and roller 47 are then swung by a cylinder 37 about the post 25. The shoe slides on the table and the roller on the cross-head travels along the back of the shoe to bend progressively the work-piece about the former. In order to swing the shoe more rapidly where the former is sharply curved an auxiliary cylinder 51 is provided. The cylinder is mounted on a member 62 fixed to the cross-head 46 and the ram has a head 56 slidable in arms 57 on a saddle 58 slidable on the back of the shoe and pivoted to the cross-head. A valve 65 on the exhaust side of the cylinder 37 is actuated by a cam to control the more rapid swinging of the arm 26 when the distance of the pivot from the former edge is decreasing. The bumper may be made from a preformed strip or it may be made from a flat strip in one operation, the shoe as it rolls round the former flanging the edges of the workpiece in addition to bending and shaping it. In a modification, the work-piece is clamped to a swinging former and is pressed by a stationary' ram.
