Abstract
683,207. Coated fabrics. STEWARTS & LLOYDS, Ltd. April 25, 1950. [June 22, 1949] No. 16544/49. Class 140. [Also in Group XVIII] A covering for protecting metal pipes, cables or the like against corrosion, comprises, in combination, a woven fabric made from glass, asbestos or other fibres inert to bacterial action, e.g. polyvinyl chloride and a paste composed of a naturally-occurring paraffinic hydrocarbon or a fatty substance such as tallow or wool grease, and a corrosion inhibiting chemical consisting of a metal, e.g. zinc, chromate and slaked lime. A filler such as whiting, slate flour, bentonite or china clay may be included. The fabric may be coated with the paste before application to the pipe or the like, or the latter may be coated with the paste, and the fabric then applied. The fibres of the fabric may be bonded together by a coating of bitumen or other suitable thermosetting, thermoplastic or analogous substance. An outer wrapping of ribbon made of polyvinyl chloride, polythene or other impervious material which is unaffected by the paste, may be applied. The Provisional Specification also refers to the use of alkali benzoates, caustic lime, and zinc dust as corrosion inhibiting materials.
