Abstract

682,852. Turning gear. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Jan. 16, 1950 [Feb. 25, 1949] No. 1089/50. Class 7 (v). In an engine starter comprising a jaw member 44 adapted to move into engagement with the engine element 45 to rotate the same, and a starter motor of a rapidly accelerating high-speed type, the jaw member 44 is arranged to be drivably connected to the motor through the intermediary of a liquid coupling, such as the F÷ttinger hydraulic coupling 18, a planetary gear train 20 and an advancing mechanism, for example nut 17 and screwshaft 42, all the elements being arranged coaxially. When the starting motor is rotated an output member 10 will transmit the rotation to the nut 17 through hydraulic coupling 18 and planetary gearing 20, whereupon the nut will force the screwshaft 42 to the left since the latter is prevented from turning by the action of a split friction ring 48 bearing against the jaw member 44. Upon engagement of the member 44 with the engine element 45 a shoulder 50 on shaft 42 abuts a similar shoulder 52 on the nut whereupon the nut will rotate the screwshaft and crank the engine, the friction ring 48 having by this time ridden off a ramp 54 on jaw member 44. A seal 49 which prevents the ingression of oil into the starter may be dispensed with if the roller bearing 40 in which the nut is journalled is replaced by sealed ball bearings.
