[Also in Group XXXI] A spare wheel stowage means for motor vehicles comprises the combination with a tray-like member adapted to be supported below the floor of a vehicle compartment to swing hingewise about an edge thereof towards and away from said floor and means to raise and lower the tray-like member, of a spare wheel carrier adapted to be slidably entered into and withdrawn from the tray-like member when the latter is lowered. The tray-like member, which is suspended at one end beneath the luggage compartment 20 by rubberized fabric hinges 21 and adjustably supported at its other end by a screw and nut mechanism 27, 29, comprises a floor 10 formed with channel guides 17, a front end wall 12 and side walls 11, 13. The rear end of the tray is open to permit inward and outward movement of a trolley 41 having wheels 45 to engage the guides 17 and adapted to support the spare wheel 40 which is located by the brackets 44 carrying the wheels 45. The trolley is provided with a handle 43, a channel member 42 to engage stops 38 on the tray to retain the trolley in its innermost position and further stops 47 which prevent forward movement of the trolley from its extended position. The upper end of the screw 27 is formed with a hexagonal head so that it may be operated by a tool 34 such as a wheel brace and a spring-loaded locking plate, displaceable by the tool, fits over the hexagonal head of the screw to prevent undesired rotation. Rubber buffer members are attached to the tray and are engaged at the limits of travel by extensions of the spindles of the wheels 45.
