Abstract

635,187. Vehicle luggage compartments. PRESSED STEEL CO., Ltd., and DIXON, J. C. March 16, 1948, No. 7827. [Class 103 (ii)] A vehicle body incorporates a luggage trunk in which there is mounted a platform or tray arranged for sliding movement and operable by manual or power means and so interconnected with a hinged trunk lid as to cause said lid to be raised or lowered by outward or inward movement of the platform. The trunk space is defined by the rear side walls 11, 12 and the rear seat back panel 13 and is closed by a lid 14. The sliding platform 21 is supported on runners 18 engaging through balls 20 other runners 17 attached to the vehicle chassis frame of which the panel 27 is dished to house the spare wheel 29 beneath the platform 21. Each hinge arm 15 of the lid carries an arm 30 pivotally connected by a link rod or chain 31 to the platform 21, so that outward sliding movement of the platform 21 automatically opens the lid 14. The platform may be moved by the handle 32 or by an electric or fluid motor (Fig. 2, not shown) mounted on the vehicle body to actuate a screwed shaft engaging with a block mounted on the underside of the platform and controlled by a push-button or the like mounted on the exterior of a body panel. Additional fixed platform panels 23, 24, 25 may surround the panel 21 or a hinged panel (Fig. 3, not shown) may be secured to the forward facing edge of the platform.
