Abstract

682,193. Making axle casings. PROJECTILE & ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. Feb. 16, 1951 [Nov. 25, 1949], No. 30327/49. Class 83 (ii). In a method of making axle casings by welding together preformed parts of sheet-metal, half gear-casings 14, 15 divided in a plane 21, 22 at right-angles to the tubular casings 12, 13 are welded together and the tubular casings 12, 13 welded on each side. The halves 14, 15 are pressed out from sheet-metal to semi-circular shape with channel crosssection and with flanged holes 20 to which the casings 12, 13 are welded at 23, 24. The tubular casings may be of seamless parallel tube or of longitudinally tapered oval crosssection made from sheet-metal blanks rolled and joined at the edges in a longitudinal seam 28. Channel-section reinforcing brackets 27 are welded on the underside and the usual partspherical bowl member is welded at the back. The tapered blanks for tapered tubes 12, 13 may be cut from sheet in alternately reversed position to eliminate waste.
