Abstract

682,042. Ratchet gearing. AMERICAN STEEL FOUNDRIES. Nov. 27, 1950, No. 28998/50. Class 80 (iii). [Also in Group XXIX] A stroke-varying indexing mechanism for use on a hydraulic press (see Group XXIX) is operated by a ratchet mechanism comprising a ratchet wheel 130 secured to a shaft 23 and a pawl 114 pivoted on a pin 112 carried by a rocker arm 118 rotatably mounted on the shaft 23. A floating link 108 also pivoted on the pin 112 is connected through a rod 104 with a pneumatic motor. The pawl 114 is biased by a spring 124 to engage the ratchet teeth. The motor is controlled by a solenoid-operated valve in timed sequence with the movements of the press and its operation causes the link 108, rocker arm 118 and pawl 114 to be moved anticlockwise whereby a pin 174 on the link first disengages a locking pawl 140.biased by a spring 160 and thus allows the pawl 114 to move the ratchet wheel until a pin 122 engages a limit switch to reverse the motor. During the retraction movement of the pawl mechanism the ratchet wheel is held against clockwise movement by a spring-loaded backing pawl 150. After a preselected number of indexing movements, all the pawls are released by a slide plate 80 operated by a second pneumatic motor whilst a third motor rotates the ratchet wheel to its initial position.
