A turret for a machine tool comprises a handle 14 which can be rotated in one direction not only to operate mechanism 24 to raise one of a number of locking-plungers 7 from a hole 6 in the machine slide 1, but also to index the turret until a second locking-plunger is actuated to engage the same hole, and which can then be counter-rotated to return the release mechanism to a position ready to operate on the second locking-plunger. As the handle 14 is rotated, the spring-pressed one-way bevelled pawl 24 pushes up the engaged plunger 7 until it jams against a cover-plate 12 so that the turret is carried round with the handle. Reverse rotation of the handle releases the pawl 24 from the plunger 7 and then positions it ready to engage the plunger in the hole 6.
