Abstract
342,019. Coding-machines. KORN, W., 75, Fregestrasse, Friedenau, Berlin. Nov. 8, 1929, No. 34155. Convention date, Nov. 8, 1928. [Class 146 (ii).] In coding-machines comprising revoluble contactbearing cylinders, movement-transmitting pinions for the cylinders are provided with means for locking the cylinders after each operation thereof. The cylinders and a counting-device geared thereto may be turned backwards to permit correction of an error in coding, or forwards to a code setting indicated by the counting-device. The apparatus shown in Figs. 1, 8, and 10 comprises cylinders 1 .. 4 provided with contact pins 20, and a cylinder 22 provided with a ratchet-wheel 21 co-operating with a pawl 25 operated by the keys, the pawl being jammed by a stop after a one-tooth movement. The cylinders are held in contact by means of pins 18 and co-operating inclines 17 on a sliding plate 17<a>, the pins being carried by a lever 19 which is rocked to permit of removal of the cylinders. Movement is transmitted from the cylinder 22 to the cylinder 1 by a pinion 31 engaging toothed wheels 26, 27. Movement is transmitted from the cylinder 1 by pinions 43, 44, 45 which engage toothed wheels 28, 29, 30 on the cylinders 2, 3, 4 and are operated intermittently by pairs of teeth 32, Fig. 10, on rings 36, 37, 38 connected to the cylinders 1, 2, 3. Each of the pinions 43, 44, 45 is formed with alternate long and short teeth 46, 47, the short teeth co-operating with the pairs of teeth 32, and the long teeth resting on the rings and locking the cylinders after each operation. The rings have gaps 32<b>, Fig. 10, for permitting movement of the pinions when engaged by the pairs of teeth. The pinions have square shanks co-operating with springs 49 to retain the pinions and cylinders in adjusted position. The pinions are mounted on arms 51 on a shaft 52, Fig. 8, which can be rocked to release the pinions by advancing a lever 57 having a pin 60 engaging a forked arm 55 on the shaft. When the pinions are released, the cylinders are independently adjustable, and roller detents 13 .. 16 move into engagement with notched wheels 5 .. 8 on the cylinders 1 .. 4 to retain the latter. The detents are carried by arms 9 .. 12 on a spring-urged shaft 65 having a finger 66 engaging a cam 64 on the shaft 52. On return of the lever, the detents are released and the pinions are re-engaged, the arrangement relieving the pinions from moving the cylinders in opposition to the detents. The lever has a pin 61 for engaging retaining-notches 62, 63. A counting- device 76 is connected by gearing 72, 74 to the cylinders and can be moved backwards or forward by means of a crank 77. Character-rings 33 mounted on the cylinders are secured in adjusted position by means of spring-pins 39. The ratchetwheel 21 may be carried by the cylinder 1, the cylinder 22 being omitted.
