Abstract

1362973 Ratchet gearing ENGLISH NUMBERING MACHINES Ltd 31 Aug 1972 [25 Nov 1971] 54828/71 Heading F2Q [Also in Division G4] An indexing mechanism comprises an index wheel having an internally toothed surface 20 and an externally toothed surface 22 which are adapted to be engaged by pawls 24, 26 mounted on fixed pivots 28, 30 and driven by rods 32, 34 from solenoids 36, 38. The pawls 24, 26 have shoulders 24a, 26a which are urged into engagement with the externally toothed surface by springs 40, 42. On the application of a pulse to the solenoid 36, it effects anticlockwise movement of pawl 24 so that a shoulder 24b engages a surface 20a of the internally toothed surface 20 causing the index wheel to rotate more than half an index step in an anti-clockwise direction. The indexing movement is completed by the action of a shoulder 26a of pawl 26 on a tooth of the externally toothed member 22 under the influence of spring 42. This movement is assisted by the action of shoulder 24a on the externally toothed member 22. For movement of the index wheel in a clockwise direction, the solenoid 38 is energized. Facilities for transfer and reset signals are provided by microswitches 48, 50 operated by a cam surface 46. In a modification, the solenoids 36, 38 are located within the circumference of the index wheel.
