Abstract

821,073. Door latches. MASUR, E. L. Nov. 27, 1956 [Dec. 27, 1955], No. 36263/56. Classes 44 and 65(1) A door latch for motor cars having a rotary latch bolt which is fastened in two stages and which is either of the gear or bifurcated type keyed on a spindle is characterized in that a mechanical actuating device is positioned to force the latch bolt from the first (intermediate) stage to the second (final fastening) stage, the actuating device being acted upon by a remotely controlled power means to which it is connected. In Fig. 1 which relates to a gear type bolt (not shown) the rotation of the bolt is controlled by a ratchet wheel 4 and pawl 6 so that the bolt can only rotate in one direction. On the bolt spindle 3 there is also fastened a cog-wheel 7 having the same number of teeth as the bolt. The actuating device comprises a finger 9 which is pivotally connected to a push rod 8 carried by a bracket 10; the push rod is connected to the piston 12 of a hydraulic cylinder 16 and this is actuated by a foot pedal controlled by the car driver. When the piston is moved the finger engages one of the teeth of the cog-wheel 7 and rotates the cog-wheel and hence the bolt so that the bolt reaches its final fastening position. The finger 9 is urged by a spring 14 into engagement with the cog-wheel and this spring yields during the retracting movement of the finger to its initial position so that the finger can pass over the teeth of the cog-wheel. In a modification instead of providing the cog-wheel 7, the ratchet wheel 4 is provided with pins near the apex of each tooth and these are engaged by a modified finger. In a construction suitable for a latch having the bifurcated rotary bolt, a plate 20 is secured to the bolt spindle 21, this, plate haying two teeth 22, 22a which can be selectively engaged by a pawl 23; when the pawl engages the tooth 22 the latch bolt is Utefirst fastening stage and when the pawl engages the tooth 22a the latch bolt is in the final fastening stage. A push rod 25 mounted on a bracket 26 and actuated by a hydraulic cylinder is provided as in the previous embodiment for moving the latch bolt to its final fastening'stage and the end of the push rod engages a pin 24 near the tip of the tooth 22a. Instead of using a hydraulic cylinder the push rod can be actuated by electromagnetic devices or vacuum powered systems.
