Abstract

681,588. Fluid-actuated valves. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP DE BATAAFSCHE PETROLEUM MAATSCHAPPIJ. Nov. 15, 1950 [Nov. 15, 1949], No. 27933/50. Class 135. A nozzle 1 for delivering liquid t( a tank comprise: a main valve ( having an orifice controlled by ar auxiliary valve 8 the stem of which is formed as a rack 14 engaging teeth 16 cut in a hollow shaft 17 mounted in the nozzle and carrying a disc 18. A spring-loaded plunger 19 carriec by the disc engages a member 21 rotatable by a crank 22 and having a projectior 23. The plunger is held in contact with the member 21 by a block 25 attached to a rod 26 passing through the hollow shaft 17 and connecting with a spring-loaded diaphragm 27. A chamber 28 on one side of the diaphragm communicates via a pipe 37 with the throat of a Venturi 31 mounted in the nozzle outlet, and with a hole 32 at the end of the nozzle. Adjacent the hole, the pipe is restricted to form a seat for a loose ball valve 34. Thus, when the crank is turned, the projection 23 engages the plunger to rotate the shaft 17 and raise first the valve 8 to permit flow through ports 13, and second, the valve 6. Part of the outflow passes through the Venturi to create suction in the pipe 37, which suction causes air to be drawn in through hole 32. When the liquid in the tank reaches the hole, the ball valve is seated, and the suction in the pipe acts in the chamber 28 to move the diaphragm against its spring and thus remove the block 25 from the plunger 19. Springs 9, 7 then rotate the shaft 17, causing the plunger to retract and seating the two valves. A chamber 10a containing the springs 7, 9, acts as a dashpot to cause slow closure of the valve 6. If it is desired to top-up the tank, the nozzle is raised slightly, and the crank turned sufficiently to open the valve 8 only.
