Abstract
681,419. Cooling dynamo-electric machines. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 28, 1951 [April 11, 1950]. No. 7209/51. Class 35. In a totally enclosed dynamo-electric machine external air is blown over the outer periphery of the enclosing casing by a fan 27 located between an inner end shield 11 and an outer end shield 17, the shield 11 having depression(s) 23 formed therein communicating with outlet openings 26 in the shield 17. Cooling air is drawn in through an opening 22 in the outer shield 17 and is discharged from the fan 27 via depressions 23 having bottom portions 24 and then finally discharged through the outlets 26. In order to avoid spinning of the air in the cavity 20, the depressions 23 have vertical sides 29. The fan 10 carried by the rotor 6 circulates the internal air within the motor and the fan 27 circulates the external air which carries off the heat dissipated in the inner end shield 11.
