681,315. Potato and like seed planters. STEYN, J. J. DE V. June 30, 1950 [July 7, 1949], No. 16361/50. Class 6(i) [Also in Group XXX] Relates to planters of the kind in which potatoes or like seeds are fed from a hopper 15 on a vehicle by an endless-belt conveyer 24 driven from a pulley 13 on the wheel axle and having spaced seed pockets, the conveyer on its upward run being coincident with a slit in an inclined wall of the hopper for entraining the seeds which are discharged one by one into a planting shoot 30 as the belt passes over the top pulley 17. According to the invention, the conveyer belt comprises blocks 24, Fig. 3, with semi-cylindrical recesses screwed at 22 to a thin flexible belt 23a, adjacent blocks on a straight run forming cylindrical holders which open out on passing over the top pulley to discharge the seed into the shoot. The top pulley is shown mounted on an inverted U-shaped frame 19 pulled by a spring 21 to keep the belt taut. The planter is connected to a tractor by a hitch 9, furrow opening and closing shares 6, 7 are provided. Two rows of blocks forming staggered seed holders, as shown in Fig. 3, may be provided.
