Planting-machines.-A machine for planting tobacco plants, bulbs, tubers. seedlings, roots, &c. comprises a travelling carriage and means for conveying the plants &c. from a feeding position to the ground and for covering them with soil and pressing it down. Means may be provided for discharging water on the plants &c. as they are planted. The machine shown is mounted on wheels 12 and comprises an endless band 16 engaging with a grooved or concave drum 14 which is driven from one of the wheels 12 through a clutch. The plants &c. are inserted by hand between the band 16 and the drum 14 and are carried down to a shoot 18 which guides them into a furrow made by a share 21. Soil is turned over them by two discs or shares 19 and is compressed by two rollers 20. The parts 19, 20, 21 may be carried on a pivoted framemember 11 which is adjustable by means of a screw 24. In a modification, the wheels 12 are dispensed with and the drum 14 is made broad and runs on the ground, the central part being reduced in diameter. The drum may be provided with markings or adjustably mounted indicators to indicate the intervals at which the plants should be fed in. For planting bulbs or tubers the drum may be provided with separated recesses to receive them. Storage boxes and seats are mounted at the sides of the drum. A water tank and delivery pipe may be provided, the pipe being fitted with a spring-controlled tap adapted to be opened periodically by projections on the drum &c. The drum 14 and band 16 may be replaced by two opposed endless bands in vertical or inclined positions.
