Abstract

May 9, 1918 P o t a t o planters; manure distributors.- A machine for planting potatoes comprises means for opening a furrow, placing potatoes therein, lightly covering the potatoes with soil, depositing manure thereon, and finally covering the manure. The machine is drawn by means of a pole and whipptetrees and is mounted on four wheels 1, 2, the front wheels 2 being adjustable vertically by means of a lever and rack or a screw 57. The frame comprises two angleiron beams 5 and two wooden beams 11 with stays and cross-pieces. Adjustably mounted on a crossbar 7 are a central double-mouldboard plough and two interchangeable angle-mouldboard ploughs, the latter being in front of the rear wheels. The potatoes are deposited by an endless belt 20 mounted in a two-part box or casing 16 and fed by hand from a supply box 52. The belt 20 is provided with blade carriers 21 and is .driven by chain or belt gearing from a shaft passing through the manure box. The spacing of the potatoes may be varied by moving the blades 21 or changing the gearing. The blades 21 engage a spring as they pass the feed opening and cause it to click audibly. The supply box 52 is provided with an adjustable sloping bottom and with a vertical sliding piece to regulate the supply of potatoes to a shoot 56 leading to the feed belt 20. Behind the casing 16 two covering-plates 26 are adjustably mounted. The manure box 27 is mounted between the beams 5, 11. It is provided with a beater or agitator shaft driven from the rear axle by a chain or belt-gearing and a clutch controlled bv the driver sitting on the box 52. Inclined pieces at the bottom of the box 27 direct the manure to a regulating slide which is controlled by means of a double-cranked piece and a thumbscrew. The manure is covered over by bent plates 50 adjustably mounted on framework fixed on an axle provided with a lever 51 by which it may be rocked to raise or lower the plates 50. According to the Provisional Specification, the feed belt may pass round three pulleys and the manure box may be provided with two discharge openings.
