Abstract

658,583. Potato - planting machines. KELLY. F. June 10, 1949, No. 15576. Convention date, Aug. 17, 1948. [Class 6(i)] A potato-planter comprises a frame 2 mounted on a ridging plough 1 and carrying a hopper 3 with tapering sides, the base of the hopper being constituted by a reciprocating slotted plate 4 which feeds potatoes into a tube 6 closed intermediately of its length by a valve 24; the valve is opened intermittently by the reciprocation of a sliding pusher member 27 which feeds the potatoes singly to a drill tube 32 leading to the ground. The sliding members 4 and 27 are driven by cranks 8 and 11 in turn driven by a ground wheel 15 provided with soil-engaging strakes 16. The valve 24 is connected to a lever 26 rocked by engagement with a lug 29 on the connecting rod 12 of the pusher 27. The pusher may terminate in a wire ring 30 from which the potatoes are ejected by engagement with a fixed lug 31. For multiple row planting, separate hoppers and feeding devices are provided.
