681,167. Operating clutches. MIDLAND SEWING MACHINE CO., Ltd., and WALKDEN, G. B. Oct. 9, 1950 [July 7, 1949], No. 17932/49. Class 80 (ii). A power transmitting unit comprises a shaft rotatably mounted in spaced bearings carried by a frame, a driving member secured to the shaft, between the bearings, a driven member loosely mounted on the shaft and moved into frictional engagement with the driving member by a wedge. shaped member, disposed between a shoe and a thrush member connected to the driven member and moved by a connection with a hand or foot operated lever. In the arrangement shown, a driving member 1 is secured on a shaft 2 carried in bearings 3, 4 on a frame 7 and a cone pulley 8, freely mounted on the shaft, is normally held out of engagement with the member 1 by a spring 9. The pulley 8 is engaged with the member 1 by means of a slotted wedgeshaped member 10 which is adjustable on the shaft 2 by means of a shoe 11 embracing the shaft and abutting a bearing housing 6 and a thrust member 12 between the pulley 8 and the member 10. The member 10 is adjusted through a connection 14 to a hand or foot lever, not shown. The wedge face of the member 10 engages in a corresponding groove on the shoe 11 and the latter is adjustable angularly of the shaft 2 to facilitate connection of the member 10 to the hand or foot lever. A brake shoe 20 engages the pulley 8 in the clutch-disengaged position. The shaft 2 may be connected to an electric motor through a flexible coupling. End thrust on the shaft 2 when the clutch is engaged, is taken by a collar 15.
