[Class 112] [Also in Group XXIV] A transmission unit for use in belt drive from a main shaft to a driven shaft placed at an angle thereto comprises a belt pulley receiving the drive and mechanically connected to a second belt pulley transmitting the drive to the driven shaft, for example that of a sewing machine, the axis of each pulley being parallel to that of the shaft to which it is connected by belts. The device shown comprises a frame 1 suspended from the table 3 and having bearings 5, 6 for a shaft 4 and a bearing 8 for a co-axial shaft 7 which is movable axially, the shafts 4, 7 being interconnected by a slot and projection which causes the shafts to rotate together but allows of relative axial movement. A driving pulley 9, which may be stepped, is freely mounted on the shaft 4 and a clutch member 10 integral with pulley 9 co-operates with a driven clutch member 11 fixed to shaft 7, the member 11 when separated from 10 being braked by a surface 14. A lever actuated by a pedal 15 against a spring 23 has a bifurcated end 17, 19 for producing axial movement of the shaft 7 to engage the clutch. The shaft 4 is connected by bevel gearing 24, 25 to a shaft 26 carrying the driven pulley 27 which is connected by a belt to the machine. Instead of bevel gearing, a flexible shaft or a universal joint may be employed. A gang of machines may be actuated by a countershaft extending at right angles to the shaft of the machines a belt drive being provided from the countershaft to each of the transmission units.
