Abstract

680,125. Tentering machines. DUNGLER, J. Sept. 14, 1949. [Jan. 27,1949] No. 23725/49. Class 42 (i). A tentering or like machine comprises in combination a gripping device adapted to engage a sheet of material, drive means formed by a portion of an endless chain or band for displacing the gripping device in a predetermined direction, a stationary support, and guide means. movably holding the device on the support, the guide means comprising a plurality of rollers arranged for rotation in two substantially mutually perpendicular planes, all of the rollers being located at one side of a vertical plane extending in the said direction and passing through the centre of gravity of the combined gripping device and associated drive means. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, a clip 1 is rivetted at 9 to a link of a driving chain 8 and is guided along its supporting rail 13 by rollers 11, 15 running in grooves 12, 14 respectively. Roller 11 is mounted in ball bearings on a gudgeon 10 supported in lugs 8a on the lower flange of the chain link. Roller 15 is carried on an arm 18 extending from the clip body. Both rollers 11, 15 and grooves 12, 14 are located on the same side of a plane 20 through the centre of gravity 19 of the clip and the associated portion of the chain. In another embodiment, Fig. 4, a clip 22 driven by a steel band 29 and guided and supported by a roller 35 carried by the clip and a roller or rollers 39 mounted on the guide rail 37, as described in Specification 668,294, is so constructed that rollers 35, 39, the band 29, and guide surfaces 36, 36a for roller 35, are all located on the same side of a plane 41 passing through the centre of gravity 40 of the clip and the associated portion of the band 29.
