Abstract

679,892. Universal joints. U.S. UNIVERSAL JOINTS CO. Sept. 29, 1950 [Aug. 1, 1950], No. 23912/50. Class 80 (ii). A universal coupling for connecting two abutting shafts 10, 11, comprises a plurality of spaced, rigid, radially - disposed, sectors 15 having toothed side portions 17, a resilient body 16 disposed in the spaces between the sectors, and means to connect certain of the sectors to one shaft and the remainder of the sectors to the other shaft. In the construction shown, two sectors are secured to a flange 12 rigid with a driving shaft 10, by bolts 21. The remaining two sectors are similarly fixed to the driven shaft 11. Spacer plates 19, conforming to the shape of the sectors, are disposed between the sectors and the flanges. The sectors may be of aluminium and may be cored-out for lightness, Fig. 6 (not shown). In operation, the spacer plates permit outward bulging of the rubber.
