Abstract

A bonding agent for impregnating tyre cords (see Groups IV (c) and IX) consists of GRS latex type II, 250 lb.; natural latex, 25 lb.; water 250 lb.; resorcinol formaldehyde solution 300 lb. The resorcinol formaldehyde solution is prepared as follows:-water 255 lb.; resorcinol 14 lb.; sodium hydroxide 1 lb.; formalin 30 lb. Ammonia may be added. An alternative composition is:-water, 70.5 lb; sulphonated fatty ester, 1.5 lb.; water-soluble phenol formaldehyde, 12 lb.; GRS latex type III, 16 lb.ALSO:<PICT:0679824/IV (c)/1> In the production of multiply tyre cord (see Group IX) a number of cords 40 are fed under tension from a creel, impregnated with bonding solution in baths 41, 42 and passed between rollers 43, 44; the top rollers are of synthetic rubber and the bottom rollers of stainless steel, and rollers 43 have a higher surface speed than rollers 44 so that the yarns are relaxed to permit penetration. The cords are then set in a stretched condition in an oven 50. The cord may be of cotton, staple rayon, other cellulosic fibres or staple synthetic fibres (e.g. nylon). The bonding agent (see Group IV (a)) may include resins and wetting agents in emulsion, solution or dispersion, and preferably includes a formaldehyde resin and a natural or synthetic rubber latex, the latter ingredient providing bonding of the cord with the rubber of the tyre carcass. The cord may be completely impregnated with the bonding agent, or the impregnation may stop short of the centre to leave an untreated central core. Specification 548,794 is referred to.
