Abstract
Textile materials, such as fabrics, cords or yarns, which have been impregnated or analogously treated with aqueous preparations containing resin-forming substances are dried to a condition in which they are readily handleable and substantially free from tackiness, by contact with superheated steam at atmospheric pressure. The impregnating composition may also contain rubber latex. Viscose rayon cord is impregnated with an aqueous preparation containing rubber latex, sodium hydroxide, resorcinol and formaldehyde, with the object of improving the adhesion of the cords, when dried, to a vulcanizable rubber composition subsequently applied to the dried cords. The cord so treated with the aqueous preparation is passed upwards through a vertically disposed tube having small apertures at the top and bottom for passage of the cord. Steam at atmospheric pressure and at 140 DEG C. enters the tube through an inlet near the bottom of the tube and passes out at the top. The water content of the cord on entering the tube may be about 50 per cent; after emergence from the tube the water content is reduced to about 20 per cent in which condition it may be handled without risk of sticking. After emerging from the top of the tube, the cord passes through the air for several feet and is then wound on a bobbin. A viscose rayon woven cord, comprising a plurality of cords of viscose rayon held by comparatively weak weft threads at intervals larger than the distance between the cords, is treated in a similar manner, the tube in which it is treated with superheated steam being slot-like in cross-section. After emerging from the tube, the woven cord may be dried further by passage round heated metal rollers. Specification 577,985, [Group VIII], is referred to.
