Abstract

An aqueous dispersion of a chlorinated or chlorosulphonated polymer of a mono-olefin, e.g. ethylene, propylene or isobutylene is made by dissolving the polymer in an organic solvent, e.g. carbon tetrachloride or toluene, emulsifying the solution in the presence of water and an emulsifying and dispersing agent and optionally a thickening agent, and removing the organic solvent by evaporation together with a portion of the emulsifying and dispersing agent. The dispersion may be concentrated by vacuum distillation or creaming. The emulsifying agent may be isoamyl or isobutyl alcohol, methyl propionate, methyl acetate, polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate, polyoxyethylene sorbitan mono-oleate, dodecyl phenyl polyglycol ether, high molecular weight carboxylic acid esters, alkyl aryl polyether alcohols and fatty acid esters of condensed glycols. The thickening agents mentioned are polydioxolane of at least 50,000 molecular weight, polyvinyl alcohol, gum karaya, locust bean gum, and high molecular weight polyethylene glycols. Paper and cloth may be coated with the dispersions.
