Abstract

794,491. Road scavengering machines. MARPLESONS, Ltd., and TEMPLE, P. L. Oct. 4, 1954 [July 3, 1953; June 8, 1954], Nos. 18433/53 and 16694/54. Class 107 A road &c. vacuum scavengering machine comprises a wheeled vehicle having suction shoes trailed therefrom on parallel linkages that allow for horizontal and vertical shoe movement. As shown, the machine has fans or centrifugal blowers 6 connected by flexible pipes 8 to pick-up shoes 7. The output of the fans, carrying refuse, is passed into cyclone separators 11, or other filtering means, and the refuse is collected in a container 9. A power device 12 is provided for the fans. The shoes 7 are carried on parallel linkages 18 (Fig. 2) which are biased by a spring 20 so that a roller 15 bears on the curb. When no curb exists the spring is disconnected or not provided. The shoes are carried on castor wheels 14. The shoes comprise an open section 21, one end of which is open to the atmosphere (the other being connected to the flexible pipe 8) and have depending rubber &c. aprons 22 backed by spring strips 25, the aprons being incised to enable them to yield locally. Vessels 13 are provided to collect heavy refuse before it reaches the fans, a baffle &c. being provided in the fan inlet. If desired the cyclones can precede the fan to relieve the fan of the refuse. A rotatable member may be provided to assist the air lift or air jets can be diverted on to the ground. The fan may deliver air into the conduit between the shoe and the separator to create the necessary suction, thus the refuse need not pass through an extractor fan.
