Abstract

679,221. Sleeve couplings. NECK, C. G. April 17, 1950, No. 9396/50. Class 38 (i). In a strain or jointing clamp fitting for a conductor or conductors, respectively, and comprising a conical shell 11 containing a wedge member 3 in the form of a bored cone having axial slots 5, 9 extending alternately from opposite ends and being forced towards the narrow end of the shell by a spring 21 so as to grip a conductor 1 inserted therein, the said narrow end of the shell merges into a hole 13 of lesser conicity, for example cylindrical and the narrow end of the wedge member projects beyond the conical surface of the shell exerting the clamping pressure sufficiently to enable the slots extending from the thick end to terminate beyond said conical surface, so as to obtain a clamping pressure which increases gradually from said narrow end. The bore of member 3 has grooves or threads 20 which gradually increase in size towards the thick end. Where the conductor comprises two layers of wires, the wedge member is located between the two layers, grooves or threads being provided also on the exterior thereof. In the case of a jointing clamp fitting shown, two shells 11 are screw-threaded on opposite ends of a member 15 whilst in the case of a strain clamp fitting for securing a conducter to an insulator, a single shell connected to a tensile element is used.
