Abstract

An electrical connector for the end of a cable having a core of a highly ductile metal such as sodium enclosed in an insulating jacket comprises a ferrule having a first threaded portion for engaging the cable insulation and a collet which engages a contact member, the collet being in screw-threaded engagement with a second screw-threaded portion of the ferrule. As shown, Fig. 2, a resilient locking ring 28 fitted in an annular groove 26 in the contact member 14, is seated in a recess 42 in the collet 12 and is held on its outer side by an abutting shoulder 38 of the ferrule 10, to prevent longitudinal, but not rotational, relative motion of the contact member 14. The first screw-threaded portion 44 of the ferrule fits between the cable core and insulation, and the contact portion 62 of the contact member 14 penetrates the cable core 20. Co-operating threads 32, 34 on ferrule and collet respectively, are tapered so as to provide wedging, sealing engagement. The ferrule and collet may be of a polysulphane plastics material. The bevelled end 54 of ferrule 10 is inserted between the cable core and insulation and the collet is screwed in, the contact member being already attached to the ferrule. The cable core may be pre-shaped to facilitate insertion (Fig. 1, not shown) and additional ridges (not shown) may be provided to engage and grip the cable insulation. In another embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) the ferrule is externally screw-threaded at both ends and the collet (212) fits over it at one end. A sealing grommet (239) may be provided between the two members. In a further embodiment (Figs. 5, 6, not shown) the contact member is provided with projecting annular ridges (329) which engage the inner bore of a resilient collet, which may be grooved. Enlarged sealing chambers (321, 323) are provided to receive a mouldable sealing material such as a silicone rubber. A splice connector for joining two cables is also disclosed (Fig. 3, not shown), the contact member having a central groove for receiving a reduced diameter portion (142) of the collet, and a core-penetrating portion at each end. The corresponding threaded portions of ferrule and collet are of opposite hands so that turning the collet engages threads at both ends simultaneously. Both in this embodiment and that of Fig. 6 a sleeve of " shrink-fit " tubing encloses the joint, and in all embodiments spanner flats may be provided on the collet.
