Abstract

678,878. Collapsable wheel chairs. CROSS.J. L. May 21, 1951 [June 28, 1950], No. 16078/50. Class 108(i) [Also in Group XXXIV] An invalid wheel chair which is laterally collapsable, Figs. 1, 3, and 5, comprises a telescopically adjustable and foldable foot-rest which may be positioned at either the front or rear of the chair, and a removable backrest provided with handles 25. The backrest may be positioned at the front or rear of the chair by means of hand turned screw threaded studs 26, and may fold down on to the removable seat 18 in the chair collapsed position. The chair has two side frames, connected forwardly by diagonal folding links 7 hinged together at 8 and to the uprights at 9, and by two diagonal links 10 pivoted to the links 7 at 11 and to the uprights at 12. The rear uprights 2a of the frames are connected by an identical linkage system. A parcels tray 13 is foldably attached to the frames by forward links 15, 15a, pivoted to the tray at 16, 16a and to the uprights 2, 2a at 12, 12a, and by a similar rearward system of links 17, 17a. The side frames are provided with horizontal open ended tubes 21 which may adjustably support the footrest at either end of 'the chair. The footrest comprises two parts 23, 23a hinged together at 24 and rigidly attached to the footrest frame. Hand operated plunger type brakes 28 (see Group XXXIV) are provided.
