Abstract

594,858. Folding push chairs. FORD, R. C. July 3, 1945, No. 16856. [Class 108 (i)] A folding pushcar or wheeled chair of the kind comprising a parallelogrammic superstructure adapted when extended to support a seat and back-rest is characterised by bars or struts pivotally mounted one on each side of the superstructure and adapted to engage an adjacent member thereof to secure the superstructure in its open position, and a foot-rest adapted to come between and secure the front wheels in their open position. In the construction illustrated the superstructure comprises upper and lower horizontal members a, b, pivotally connected with front and rear members c, d, the latter of'which is pivotally connected to the upper portion r of the folding handle. The wheels are mounted in hangers m carried by blade-springs n pivotally connected by members o to the horizontal frame members b. The outer sides of the hangers engage with downward extensions c', d<2>, of the front and rear side members c, d. A foot rest h is pivotally attached to the securing bars or struts g carried by the frame membersb, and in the open position engages between the inside portions of the wheel hangers m. The bars g are provided with a series of notches engageable with pins c<2> on the frame members c, and which enable the inclination of the chair back to be adjusted. Internal support for the hinges of the rear wheels is afforded by a lower horizontal member d', integral with the rear side members d. To fold the chair, catches are released to enable the upper portion r of the handle to be lowered, and the foot board h withdrawn from between the front wheels, thus enabling the structure to be collapsed in the forward direction as shown in Fig. 3. The wheels may then be folded inwardly, the tyres being maintained in contact by the springs n.
