Abstract
677,779. Making commutators for dynamoelectric machines. HOOVER, Ltd., and CAMPRUBI, B. May 12, 1950 [May 20, 1949,] No. 13537/49. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). [Also in Group XXXV] Extruding. -In a method of making a commutator for a dynamo-electric machine a billet of copper &c. is backward-extruded in a die B2, Fig. 2, by an impacting plunger B<SP>1</SP> having longitudinal grooves which form similar tongues on the inner surface of the blank to engage a body of insulating material subsequently moulded in the centre. The billet may be cylindrical to produce a cupped blank, as shown, or annular to produce a flanged blank. The inwardly-projecting tongues D, Fig. 5, may diverge or converge in pairs to dovetail with the insulating material C. The end wall or flange A<SP>2</SP> of the blank is removed before the insulating material C is moulded inside and the blank is longitudinally divided to form segments. In a modification, a plunger may form deep grooves F, Fig. 7, and cylindrical or dovetail-headed tongues G for engaging the insulating material and the segments are separated by turning down the outer face of the blank in a lathe. In a further modification the segments have split parallel sided tongues at each end of the segments which diverge in opposite directions for locking in the insulating material.
