663,454. Making commutators; powder metallurgy. SOC. PARVEX, SOC. AR. L. Oct. 19, 1949 [Nov. 9, 1948], No. 26883/49. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). [Also in Group XXXV] In a method of making a commutator, metal powder is compacted in a mould 1 around a core 2, Fig. 1, and sintered, the sintered body 7 then being placed in a mould together with a central sleeve 8 and the space between the sleeve and the body filled with a plastic to form the insulation between the segments and the outer rim of sintered metal is then removed by a machining operation. In a modification, the vanes of the core are separate strips 12 fitted into radial slots formed in the core 13. The metal segments may be initially connected by an end ring 19, Fig. 7, instead of by an outer circumferential ring. Longitudinal ribs may be formed on the vanes 12 in order to effect a keying between the sintered metal segments and the insulating plastic.
