Abstract

706,766. Commutators for dynamo-electric machines. WATLIFFE CO., Ltd. Feb. 23, 1951 [Nov. 24, 1949], No. 30158/49. Class 35 A moulded commutator is made from a solid blank having segments 4 separated by radial slots 7 and joined by a central hub 3, by moulding a first plastic 8 between the segments and in annular grooves 2 to bond them together independently of the hub, boring out the hub, and moulding a second plastic 10 to form the insulating core of the commutator. Steel reinforcing rings 11 are secured in the grooves 2 by embedding in the second plastic 10 which also fixes the mounting bush 12. Since two moulding processes are used, different plastics having suitable characteristics can be used. The outer surface of the commutator is finally machined to remove the outer layer of plastic 8. The original blank may be machined from the solid or, in a modification, rolled up from a strip of metal having suitable slots. In this case the metal joining the segments is in the form of an external ring, which is subsequently machined off.
