Abstract

5 : 8-Dialkoxy-2-tetralones are prepared from benzoquinone and 2-alkoxylbutadiene by carrying out a diene synthesis in neutral medium to give a 6-alkoxy-tetrahydro-naphthaquinone, treating the latter with an alkylating agent in an alkaline medium to form a 1 : 4 : 6-trialkoxy - dihydronaphthalene and hydrolysing the latter with acid; the alkoxy groups have not more than five carbon atoms. In the example, 1 : 4 - diketo - 6 - methoxy - 1 : 4 : 5 : 8 : 9 : 10 - hexahydronaphthalene is made from quinone and 2-methoxybutadiene and is converted successively into 1 : 4 : 6-trimethoxy-5 : 8-dihydronaphthalene and 5 : 8-dimethoxy-2-tetralone. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, any substituent may be present in the 6-position that can be decomposed to give a keto group; the corresponding substituted butadiene is used as starting material. It is also stated that 5 : 8-diacyloxy-2-tetralones such as 5 : 8-diacetoxy-2-tetralone may be made by an analogous process. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
