Abstract

676,485. Vehicular endless tracks. INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER CO. May 22, 1950, No. 12769/50. Class 79(i) [Also in Group XXXII] A joint for an endless track of a tractor or like vehicle compises inner and outer concentric sleeves of substantially equal length, a rubber bushing compressed between them, a bolt extending through the inner sleeve, truncated conical collars located on projecting portions of the bolts with their smaller ends directed outwardly, an expansible split ring coating with each collar, the ring being tapered internally and having a cylindrical periphery to engage a bore in one of a pair of outer or outwardly offset portions of track link element, and a nut on the bolt so that the split rings can be drawn axially together to press the collars tightly against the ends of the inner sleeve and to exert outward pressure in the bores in the element so that the link elements are rigidly connected to the inner sleeve. As shown the track elements each comprise the outwardly offset end portions 22, 22a, and inwardly offset end portions 17, 17a. Bores 18, 18a, in the inwardly offset portions are pressed on to the outer sleeve 19, Arranged between the outer sleeve and the inner sleeve 24 is arranged the rubber bushing 34, relative angular movement between the inner and outer sleeves stressing the rubber bushing. Within the inner sleeve 24 is the bolt 26 and against the ends of the sleeve are arranged the collars 27. The split rings 29 are interposed between the bores 23, 23a, in the outwardly offset end portions 22, 22a, and the peripheries of the collars 27. When a nut 32 is tightened on the bolt 26, the head 31 of the bolt and the nut bear on the rings causing them to engage the collars and thus a rigid connection is formed between the portions 22, 22a and the bolt 26. The joint thus formed forms a readily disconnectible joint between the ends of an endless track. The rubber bushings are inserted when adjacent track elements are in an angular relationship.
