Abstract
663,721. Vehicular endless tracks. BRISTOL TRACTORS, Ltd., and FIELD, E. April 8, 1948 [Aug. 11, 1947], No. 22209/47. Class 79(i) [Also in Group XXV] An endless track is characterized by the provision at each joint of adjacent links of a bush or bushes of resilient material having a pre-formed flange at one end and interposed between each link pivot pin and the adjacent connected link, the bush or bushes being compressed axially on the pivot pin to a fixed minimum distance by clamping together the outer chain links in such a manner that angular movement between adjacent links is absorbed in the resilient material by torsional elasticity. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, the bush assembly comprises two aligned resilient bushes 8 each having a pre-formed flange 9 at one end. Nuts 7 serve to clamp the outer links 4 and the spindle 1 together and to compress the bushes in an outer tube 3 and on the spindle 1 to a fixed minimum distance determined by shoulders 1x on the spindle 1. A roller 10 encircling the tube 3 is engaged by teeth of the driving sprocket (not shown). In an alternative embodiment, the outer links 4 are secured to a simple spindle, having no shoulders 1x, by means of cotter pins which determine the fixed minimum distance to which the bushes are compressed. The outer tube 3, Fig. 1, may have a flange 11 on its inner surface at the junction of the bushes 8, as shown in Fig. 3 which shows an alternative embodiment wherein the bushes are compressed between the outer tube 3 and an inner bush tube 6 and between the outer links 4 to a fixed minimum distance determined by the ends of the inner tube 6. The outer tube 3 is supported in a bearing portion 4x of the adjacent link. The flange 11 may be omitted. Each link may be provided with a tooth or projection (not shown) engaged by rollers on the driving sprocket. The track may be initially assembled in the form of a curve, so that when in use the resilient bushes will have torsional resistance to reverse pivoting of the links, thus resisting flattening of the track between the weight carrying wheels and distributing the ground pressure more evenly.
