Abstract
676,413. Mounting furnace electrodes. SOC. ANON. DES MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE ST.-GOBAIN, CHAUNY & CIREY. May 19, 1948 [May 21, 1947], No. 13572/48. Class 39(iii) In furnaces having graphite electrodes traversing the furnace walls below the surface of the molten mass, a portion of each electrode is received as a close sliding fit in a member extending at least part way through the furnace wall from the outside, that portion of the member that is in contact with the electrode being wholly constituted of material having a coefficient of expansion close to that of graphite and a low coefficient of friction in relation to graphite. In Fig. 1, the member is a sleeve 4 surrounded by a casing or deposit 6 of metal or other material impermeable to air, such as silicates of high melting point. A cooling gas is passed through a box 7 surrounding the sheath 6. In Fig. 2, gaseous jets from a box 7 surrounding the electrode 3 cool the end of the sleeve 4. The sleeve 4 may be of carbon and, in particular, of graphite and is axially displaceable as is also the electrode 3. The sleeve 4 prevents air from contacting that region of the electrode which reaches a temperature at which the carbon or graphite will burn in air. The cooling means may be regulated such that the molten mass 2 contacting the sleeve 4 remains in a fluid condtion. The molten mass 2 may be glass.
