Abstract

693,150. Glass-melting furnaces. SOC. ANON DES MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE ST.-GOBAIN, CHAUNY, ET CIREY. May 16, 1951 [May 17, 1950], No. 11488/51. Class 51(ii) In a glass making furnace of the tank type, in order to prevent movement of unmelted charge material into the withdrawal zone, obstacles are provided in the molten bath in the form of pillars mounted vertically in the sole of the furnace in such a manner as to permit horizontal flow of molten glass to and from the fusion zone both at the surface of and below the level of the floating charge material. Figs. 1 and 2 show the invention applied to a furnace having burners 5 disposed on the lines x-x<SP>1</SP> in the end wall of the furnace, charging dog-houses 6, and pillars 7 on which rests a T- shaped table 8 disposed just below the surface of the molten bath 4. A mass of charge material 9 from heavy intermittent charging through the doghouses 6 accumulates on and around the pillars 7 and table 8. In a modification Fig. 3 (not shown), the furnace has transervse burners, with a series of dog-houses disposed in an end wall, the pillars being disposed in quincunx on two lines parallel with the axis of the burner and in the zone of operation thereof. No transverse table is provided in this case. The pillars and table may be made of graphite.
