Abstract

19,196. Parker, T. Sept. 7. Silicon.-Aluminates or silicates of sodium or potassium, mixed with carbon or pitch, are treated in an electric furnace for the production of metallic sodium or potassium; alumina, silicon carbide, and silicon are residual products according to the salts used, the excess of carbon, temperature, & c. The metals are volatilized and condensed. Other products are removed from the bottom of the furnace in solid form, or the process may be worked with a fused slag. Nitrogen or other gases may be passed into the furnace. The furnace is shown in Fig. 1 and consists of a charging-hopper F, carbon electrodes B, and a refractory body C provided with a pocket D from which the vaporized sodium or potassium is drawn off by the pipe E.
