Abstract
338,131. Carborundum Co., (Assignees of Benner, R. C., and Easter, G. J.), and Hawke, C. E. Dec. 7, 1928, [Convention date]. Resistance furnaces. - Ca.rbide resistances are protected by a non-oxidizing gas or a surrounding body of granular carbon. The resistance may be of silicon or boron carbide. The carbon may be in the form of crushed petroleum coke. In Fig. 1 the resistors 1 and the muffle 4 are embedded in carbon 2. The muffle is made of refractory material having a thermal conductivity in excess of .006 calories em.<3> sec. ‹C. Fused alumina, recrystallized silicon carbide as described in Specification 19493/02, [Class 1, Acids, alkalies, &c.], or bonded silicon carbide. as described in Specification 326,560, [Class 22, Cements &c.], are suitable refractories. The muffle walls are preferably protected with a glaze, made as described in Specification 319,647, [Class 37, Electricity, Measuring &c.]. The terminal members 7 are provided with chrome iron tips 6 welded thereto. Heat dissipating members 8 are threaded on the terminals and may be cooled by an air-blast. In a modification the resistance is formed of a number of plates held together by pressure between water cooled terminals. In Fig. 3 resistance 1 is embedded in carbon 2 in a silicon carbide shell 5a fitted with graphite or carbide end plugs 24 surrounded with insulation 25. One plug is adapted for free longitudinal movement. In Fig. 5 the resistances 1 a.re embedded in carbon 2 arranged in the space 12 between the side walls 11 and the outer walls. The walls 11 are of porous recrystallized silicon carbide. A slight gas pressure is maintained in the space 12 and the monoxide formed therein filters into the furnace chamber. The carbon may be replenished through doors 18. In a modification the resistances are arranged in the muffle itself. A further modification simply comprises an arrangement of carbide resistances in a furnace chamber to which producer gas is supplied directly. Specification 20810/04 also is referred to.
