Abstract

163,727. Travis, W., and Watson & Co., Ltd., T. H. Aug. 13, 1919. Resistance furnaces.-A resistance is pro. tected against oxidation by a casing consisting of bonded and fired silicon carbide. The core may consist of a series of discs, plates, rings, &c., or powder or granules, of amorphous carbon or carbonaceous material. It may be placed in a mould and a mixture of powdered or granular carborundum and clay rammed around it. Heat may be then applied externally, or electrio current passed through the resistance to form it into a solid mass. The mixture may alternately be applied as a paste, or may be separately moulded to form the casing. Heat may be radiated from the internal surfaces of a hollow resistance. The resistance may be embedded in the hearth or wall of a furnace for melting metals, glass, etc.; other resistance may be arranged above the charge. Furnaces for tempering, annealing, or reheating may also be heated by such resistances. According to the Provisional Specification, the casing may also be composed of fused alumina or other material.
