Abstract

Class 57 In or for machinery having two reciprocatory or rotary engines maintained at substantially equal speeds and at a predetermined phase angle relationship by synchronizing apparatus driven from the planetary gearing 1 of a differential gear interposed between the two machines, the synchronizing apparatus comprises a pawl carrier 5 having a pair of pawls 4 pivoted thereon and adapted to engage between them a crank pin 3 driven from the planetary gearing, the pawl carrier being pivoted on an axis 6 spaced from the pivotal axes of the pawls and being adapted to control the speed regulating mechanism of at least one of the machines. The synchronizing apparatus is operated by a differential gear comprising sun gears c, d, on shafts a, b driven in opposite directions by the respective machines. The planet carrier 1 is connected to an indicator 31 through bevel gearing and an adjustable coupling comprising a worm wheel 26 on a shaft 25 in mesh with a worm 27 carried by a bracket 28 on a shaft 29. Upon adjusting the worm by a handle 30 the angular relationship of the indicator 31, and the planet carrier, which may also carry a pointer, may be varied thus changing the phase relationship of the machines. In addition or alternative to the adjustable coupling a friction clutch may be used. The indicator shaft carries a crank 2 having its crank pin 3 engaging between the pawls 4 which are biassed by a spring 15. Movement of the crank pin thus causes a pivotal movement of the pawl carrier 5 and this movement is transmitted through a slide block 22, engaging in an arcuate guide 7, and link 21, bell crank 33, and links 8 to the speed regulating levers 9, 10 of the respective machines. The movement of the link 21 may be varied or the synchronizing apparatus may be rendered inoperative during manual speed adjustment by a hand lever 23. The pawls 4 are tripped during excessive movement of the crank pin when further movement of the pawl carrier has been limited by stops 18.
