Abstract
Vinyl methyl ether, or a mixture of a preponderating amount of vinyl methyl ether and a smaller amount, preferably 5-25 per cent of vinyl ethyl, n- or iso-propyl, or n- or isobutyl ether, is polymerized at a temperature between 75 DEG C. and the decomposition temperature of vinyl methyl ether, in the presence of a polymerization catalyst which is boron trifluoride or its addition product with water or an alcohol, ether, acetal or lactone. The products are oily compounds soluble in aliphatic hydrocarbons, and may be used as softening agents for nitrocellulose, cellulose ethers, chlorinated rubber, polyvinyl chloride and polystyrene.
