Abstract

Vinyl esters are polymerized alone or together with esters of unsaturated mono- and dicarboxylic acids in an aqueous medium containing an emulsifying system which consists of 2-10% by weight of monomer of one or more non-ionogenic surface-active substances and 1-5% by weight of one or more weakly cationically active protective colloids. Non-ionogenic surface-active substances specified are polyalkylene oxides and adducts thereof with long chain alcohols or substituted phenols, e.g. coconut oil alcohols, n-dodecyl alcohol and p-nonyl phenol. Cationically active protective colloids specified are polyalkyleneimines, polyacrylamides, products obtained by partial or complete Hofmann's degradation of polyacrylamide and poly-N-vinylpyrrolidone, including mixtures of polyvinyl pyrrolidones of differing K-values. Also present may be anionically active sulphonates. The examples describe the homopolymerization of vinyl acetate and its copolymerization with vinyl butyrate, di-n-butyl maleate and di-n-hexyl maleate in processes which involve gradual addition of monomer to the reaction system and the addition of further quantities of the catalyst (potassium persulphate) as the reaction proceeds.
