Abstract

Acrylic esters, alone or in admixture with esters of unsaturated mono- and di-carboxylic acids, are polymerized in aqueous emulsion containing an emulsifying system consisting of 2-10% by weight of the monomer of one or more non-ionic surface-active substances, and 1-5% by weight of the monomer of one or more weakly cation active protective colloids. Non-ionic surface active agents specified are polyalkylene oxides and adducts thereof with long chain alcohols or phenols. Cation active colloids specified are polyalkyleneimine, polyacrylamide and derivatives thereof, and poly-N-vinyl pyrrolidone. The example describes the polymerization of n-butyl acrylate in an aqueous medium containing an adduct of ethylene oxide and p-nonyl phenol, poly-N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone, sodium heptadecyl sulphonate and potassium persulphate, with incremental addition of monomer and catalyst as the reaction proceeds.
