Abstract

1,266,037. Vinyl acetate copolymers. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 18 June, 1969 [17 Sept., 1968], No. 30864/69. Heading C3P. [Also in Divisions C4-C5] Copolymers having an ethylene polymer backbone along which are distributed side chains of hydrocarbon or oxy-substituted hydrocarbon are made by copolymerizing ethylene with at least one additional ethylenically unsaturated monomer. A copolymer of vinyl acetate is made by passing ethylene into a solution of vinyl acetate in benzene in an autoclave at 300‹ F. and 950 p.s.i.g. and then slowly adding more vinyl acetate and a solution of t-butyl peroxide whilst maintaining the addition of ethylene. A copolymer of ethylene, vinyl acetate and a mixture of C 12-16 alpha-monoolefins is similarly made by charging the reactor with a vinyl acetate solution and adding a mixture of vinyl acetate and the mixed olefins using lauryl peroxide as the catalyst. A copolymer of ethylene, vinyl acetate and C 13 Oxo alcohol diesters of fumaric acid is disclosed.
