Abstract
Vinyl chloride or acetate is polymerized in solution in a mixture of water and methanol or ethanol using an alkyl boron catalyst, the mixture being a solvent for the monomer but not for the polymer which precipitates therefrom. For vinyl acetate the preferred mixture consists of equal volumes of water and alcohol and for vinyl chloride the preferred mixture is one volume of water with one to four volumes of alcohol. The preferred catalysts are the tri-C1-4 alkyl borons. In Examples (1) vinyl acetate is polymerized under nitrogen at 20 DEG C. using triethyl boron as catalyst in three times its volume of methanol/water (50/50 and 55/45 by vol.) and (for comparison) methanol, acetone, tetrahydrofuran and heptane and (2) vinyl chloride is polymerized under nitrogen at -20 DEG C. in methanol/water (50/50 and 80/20), methanol, diethyl ether, tetrahydrofuran and heptane. Specification 820,675 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 864,137.
