Abstract
1,163,708. Epoxy resin foams. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 11 March, 1968 [10 March, 1967], No. 11756/68. Headings C3B and C3C. A cellular epoxy resin is obtained by polymerizing an epoxy resin in the presence of a blowing agent, a catalyst comprising a Lewis acid or complex thereof and a bis-secondary alcohol of the formula in which each R 1 -R 10 is hydrogen, alkyl or halogen. An auxiliary liquid may be added to help dissolve the hydroxy compound, this may be an ether, alcohol, halohydrocarbon, ketone or ester. Preferred epoxy compounds are reaction products of bisphenol A with epichlorhydrin which may be mixed with a cyclic ether or acetal. The blowing agent is CFCl 3 , CHFCl 2 , CH 2 Cl 2 or CCl 2 F.CClF 2 . A silicone oil may be added as pore regulator. The catalyst used in the examples is BF 3 -o-chloroaniline complex.
