Abstract
1378930 Trihalomethyl-hydrocarbon glycidyl ethers B F GOODRICH CO 19 July 1972 [19 July 1971] 33682/72 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] Novel compounds of the general formula wherein X is -Cl, -Br or -I and R<SP>1</SP> is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl radical each containing up to 12 carbon atoms, are prepared by reacting the corresponding trihalomethyl hydroxy compound with an allyl halide in the presence of a base and then epoxidizing the intermediate using a per-acid, or reacting the intermediate with Cl 2 or Br 2 in NaOH to give the halohydrin which is then cyclized using base. Polyether compositions are prepared from the glycidyl ethers. Example I describes the preparation of 2,2,2- trichloroethyl glycidyl ether and other specified starting materials of formula, HO-R<SP>1</SP>-CX 3 , are 2,2,2-tribromoethanol; 4,4,4-triiodobutanol; 8,8,8-trichlorooctanol ; 10,10,10-tribromodecanol; 5,5,5-triiodo-2-methylpentanol; 6,6,6-tribromo-3-ethyl-5-methylhexanol; 5,5,5-trichloro-3,3-dimethylpentanol; trichloromethyl cyclopentanol; p-tribromomethyl phenol; otrichloromethyl benzyl alcohol; and p-2,2,2-triiodoethyl phenol.
