Abstract

Vitamins of the B12 group are recovered from aqueous solution by bringing into intimate contact with a solution of phenol in an apolar organic liquid, the phenol concentration being kept between 10 and 25 per cent weight/volume. Treatment may take the form of shaking in counter-current flow. As apolar organic liquids there may be used chloroform, benzene and ether. Alternatively for small quantities of vitamin B12 purification may be effected by passing the phenol-containing solvent through a column of moist silica-gel.
