Abstract
Alkylene oxides containing carbonyl-group bearing compounds are purified by treatment in the gaseous phase with an alkali metal borohydride in the presence of 0.1% by weight (based on alkylene oxide) to the dew point concentration of water. It is preferred to use the borohydride supported on an inert carrier, preferably pumice stone. Alternatively, the borohydride can be used as a suspension in a liquid distributing agent, e.g. hydrocarbons, ethers or alkylene oxides. The purification is conveniently effected by distilling the impure alkylene oxide and introducing the borohydride into the column at a point where the water concentration is within the required range. Examples relate to the treatment of propylene, 1,2- and 2,3-butylene oxides. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 891,823.
